As we’ve studied the Doctrine of Christ this morning, I was struck by how simple our message in the gospel really is. Or at least how simple it should be 🙂 In 2 Nephi 31, Nephi says,“I amust speak concerning the doctrine of Christ; wherefore, I shall speak unto you plainly, according to the plainness of my prophesying. 3For my soul delighteth in aplainness; for after this manner doth the Lord God work among the children of men. For the Lord God giveth light unto the bunderstanding; for he speaketh unto men according to their clanguage, unto their understanding.”
Our purpose as missionaries is to invite others to Come Unto Christ, by helping them to receive the restored gospel of Jesus Christ through Faith in Jesus Christ and His Atonement, Repentance, Baptism, Receiving the Gift of the Holy Ghost, and Enduring to the End. And it really is that simple.
It’s so easy to get caught up in the many layers of the gospel, which increase our understanding over time. Those layers are crucial in applying the gospel to each person’s needs at different times in their life. However, the Lord doesn’t expect us to learn them all at once. And, He asks that as we learn more and grow in our Faith, we remember these initial principles and use them as the foundation upon which we build everything else. Anything we learn without being related back to our Faith in Jesus Christ is pointless because it will only lead us away from Christ, not closer to Him.
As we Repent and are Baptized, and then continue repenting, we are able to be worthy of and receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost. Through the Gift of the Holy Ghost, we are able to learn from the Spirit and be comforted, strengthened, and enlightened. Each experience we have will improve our testimony, help us to Endure to the End, and motivate us to help others Come Unto Christ. As we ground our lives in these simple principles, we will find our understanding and love for the gospel come full circle and grow in ways we never imagined.
