“When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? … “And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. “And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. “And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven” Matthew 16:13, 16–19
“Peter was to hold the keys. Peter was to hold the sealing power, that authority which carries the power to bind or seal on earth or to loose on earth and it would be so in the heavens. Those keys belong to the President of the Church—to the prophet, seer, and revelator. That sacred sealing power is with the Church now. Nothing is regarded with more sacred contemplation by those who know the significance of this authority. Nothing is more closely held…Temples are the very center of the spiritual strength of the Church.” -Boyd K. Packer
As missionaries, we’re asked fairly often what the difference is between our church and other churches. If someone believes in Jesus Christ, and they live a good life, why should they leave their church to come to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints?
The priesthood power, the literal authority to act in God’s name, is the reason. Because by accepting ordinances under the proper authority, we literally invite the power of God into our lives. The power to wash away our sins, the power to be relieved from feelings of guilt and shame, the power to have His Spirit with us at all times, the power to know that we can be with our family forever.
This power has blessed my life beyond measure, giving me peace and assurance no matter what the world throws at me. It provides a foundation that will stand steady and sure. That is the difference. That is why I belong to the restored church of Jesus Christ on the earth today.
